Here Comes the Pollen! Are you Ready?
It’s that time again - Blue skies, sunshine, and a slew of pollen painted atop our windshields and sidewalks in bright speckles of green. Feeling the itch and sneezes already? Let’s talk about some life hacks that can give us relief from the Spring-time allergy season this year.
KEEP IT COOL
Ice packs, a cold shower, and a cooling face wash are key players to keep in our vanity during the Spring months.
Preparing a cold compress for relief from eye allergies helps to shrink the irritated eye tissue and provide soothing comfort.
INSTRUCTIONS ON MAKING A cold compress PACK:
Pour ice and water into a small bowl
Soak a clean washcloth into the bowl, then wring out the excess water
Fold the washcloth and place it on top of your closed eyelids until symptoms are relieved
Repeat as needed.
When the itching is at its peak, a cooling face wash and a cold shower help to flush allergens that cling to our skin and inside our body’s airways (i.e. nose and ears) to ease our irritation.

DECONGEST
Over-the-counter nasal and throat decongestants can work to alleviate our respiratory system and get rid of the itchy coughs. Be sure to clear it with your Primary Care Doctor whether a decongestant is safe for you and for suggested products.
GLASSES OR CONTACTS?
To play it safe, our eyes may find more comfort in sticking to glasses during the high pollen days. Wearing glasses avoids causing further irritation from introducing an additional layer into our eyes with contact lenses. If contacts are the preferred eyewear, then investing in a premium Dailies contact lens modality that is high in moisture and breathability would be the optimal choice. These premium contact lens brands work to promote hydration in the eyes, while also minimizing the risk of exacerbating the allergy symptoms.
BRING IN THE DROPS!
If your eyes are still experiencing itching, redness, and watering, then over-the-counter anti-histamine eye drops might be the solution. Consult with your Eye Doctor for a thorough assessment. Not only can they recommend the right brand for you, but they can also determine if a prescription eye drop is a more effective alternative to address your specific eye symptoms.
