Amniotic Membrane Therapy
What is an Amniotic Membrane?
Amniotic membranes are natural, ultra-thin, and lightweight technology that can be used to treat a host of eye conditions. This innovative approach is a type of stem cell therapy that involves applying the amniotic membrane to the front surface of the eye like a protective bandage to promote healing, reduce inflammation, prevent scarring, and enhance the overall health of the ocular surface. Amniotic membranes can treat moderate to severe chronic Dry Eye, corneal abrasions and erosions, ulcers, chemical burns, aggravated pterygiums, and shingles.
How Does Amniotic Membrane Therapy Work?
Anti-Inflammatory Properties
Amniotic membranes have anti-inflammatory agents that trap and break down inflammatory cells, which reduces inflammation and fibrosis - tissue thickening and scarring - from corneal damage.
Promoting Healing
Amniotic membranes provide a natural protective layer on the cornea, which aids in stabilizing the surface of the eye, reduces irritation from blinking, and promotes regrowth of healthy corneal cells.
Cell Proliferation & Tissue Regeneration
The membranes release growth factors, cytokines, and proteins that stimulate tissue regeneration, cell proliferation, and promote healthy tear production.
Structural Repair
Their collagen-rich medium provides structural support and strength to the compromised corneal tissue as it heals.
Reducing Pain
The membranes help alleviate discomfort and pain associated with the eye condition being treated.
The Procedure
Applying an amniotic membrane tissue is a simple, painless in-office procedure that takes less than 10 minutes. A numbing drop will be instilled into the eye. A bandage contact lens is piggybacked onto the tissue, which is then placed on the surface of the eye. Then, the membrane is gently smoothed with a moistened sponge.
The bandage contact lens is removed after 5-7 days or when the membrane has fully dissolves. Patients usually do not feel any discomfort, but may notice a little blurriness in vision for 12-24 hours as the epithelium heals and the tissue is absorbed.
Is Amniotic Membrane Therapy Right For You?
Amniotic membrane therapy has shown great promise in treating various eye complications including moderate to severe Dry Eye, especially in cases where traditional treatments have not been enough. Schedule a consult to determine the most suitable treatment approach based on your specific condition.
